Welcome to our December 2019 newsletter

After our very successful visit to India with Hon Simon Bridges – Leader of the Opposition and Hon Gerry Brownlee, National Party spokesperson for Foreign Affairs in August, I as a member and Co-chair of the South and South East Asia Parliamentary Friendship group of the New Zealand Parliament had the opportunity to attend the inaugural exchange with Indonesia.

From Indonesia the South and South East Asia Parliamentary Friendship group travelled to India.  We had the opportunity to meet and interact a number of Government and business officials during our visit.

During our visit to the Indian Parliament I had the absolute honour to receive the reprint copy of the original handwritten Constitution of India without any amendment from Chair of Indian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Shri P P Chaudhary. This was made special by the fact that I received it on constitution day of India.

During our visit members of South-East Asia Parliamentary Friendship Group also met with Shri V Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs, Federal Government of India and discussed measures to further strengthen parliamentary ties, trade and in particular to start direct flights between New Zealand and India.

The friendship group then visited the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Asia’s premiere stock exchange. Our visit to BSE was insightful - India's economy is rapidly growing and it is fantastic to see how the country is adapting to changes in global trade and business

One of the important places we had the opportunity to visit was the Maharashtra State Assembly. Located in India’s financial capital Mumbai, the legislative assembly is responsible for Governance of the state of Maharastra. Visiting the legislature and interacting with law makers was special and as locals will usually say about their state – Jai Maharastra

The Indo-Nats special interest group of the New Zealand National Party organised an end of the year barbeque to thank volunteers for their time and support while seeking their time for the 2020 general elections. This was indeed a commendable effort by the Indo Nats team led by the chair Kulwant Singh Minhas.

Finally, I would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and New Year 2020. My electorate  office in Papatoetoe and Parliament will be closed over the Christmas and New Year break from 20 December 2019 and reopen on Monday, 20 January 2020.

Yours sincerely,

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi
